Claims7
A process for preparing an .alpha.-(alkylthio)acetic acid derivative of the formula ##STR14## wherein R represents a thienyl, furyl or aryl group, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent an alkyl group, which comprises reacting an .alpha.-chloroketene mercaptal of the formula ##STR15## wherein R and R.sup.1 are as defined above, with an alcohol of the formula
- R.sup.2 OH
- wherein R.sup.2 is as defined above, in the presence of an acid catalyst.
A process for preparing an .alpha.-(alkylthio)acetic acid derivtive of the formula ##STR16## wherein R represents a thienyl furyl or aryl group, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent an alkyl group, which comprises reacting a ketene mercaptal S-oxide of the formula ##STR17## wherein R and R.sup.1 are as defined above, with an acid chloride to form an .alpha.-chloroketene mercaptal of the formula ##STR18## wherein R and R.sup.1 are as defined above, and reacting the .alpha.-chloroketene mercaptal with an alcohol of the formula
- R.sup.2 OH
- wherein R.sup.2 is as defined above, in the presence of an acid catalyst.
