Abstract
A method is provided for synthesizing alkylnitriles and alkylaminonitriles by reacting formaldehyde, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 monohydric alcohol and a compound having the formula R.sub.1 R.sub.2 NH where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms under effective conditions in the presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and recovering from the resulting reaction mixture, a product containing at least one of the above nitrile compounds.
Claims13
A method for synthesizing alkylnitriles and alkylaminonitriles which comprises effecting reaction between formaldehyde, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 monohydric alcohol and a compound having the formula R.sub.1 R.sub.2 NH where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms at a temperature between about 500.degree. F. and about 1200.degree. F., a pressure between about 1 and about 100 atmospheres and a liquid hourly space velocity between about 0.2 and about 20 in the presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and recovering from the resulting reaction mixture, a product containing at least one of the above nitrile compounds.
