Abstract
A sealing ring for a rotary shaft is disclosed. The sealing ring has a planar frusto-conical configuration and is received in an obliquely slanted groove provided in either the rotary shaft or the bearing surface surrounding the shaft. The use of an obliquely slanted groove causes seal contact over a wide area on the rotary shaft reducing heat buildup, while the frusto-conical configuration insures that the lips of the seal are in firm continuous circumferential contact with the shaft. Oblique mounting of the sealing ring also causes axial flow of the fluid being sealed and the formation of a fluid annulus adjacent the seal and on the pressure side thereof. Selective positioning of a plurality of obliquely mounted sealing rings results in the formation of complementary annuli and the axial flow of fluid between adjacent sealing rings.
Claims11
A sealing ring of resilient material having a base portion at one end and a sealing portion at the other end that is bifurcated to form radially inner and outer sealing lips, said sealing ring having a free state and a deformed state;
- in said free state a centerline through a cross section of each of said portions lies in a cone, said base portion has an end surface and radially inner and outer surfaces, said radially inner and outer surfaces are substantially parallel to said centerline, and said end surface is substantially perpendicular to said radially inner and outer surfaces;
- and in said deformed state a centerline through a cross section of each of said portions is substantially parallel with said longitudinal axis, said radially inner and outer surfaces are substantially parallel with said longitudinal axis, and said end surface is substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.
In combination, a deformable sealing ring, a shaft having a longitudinal axis, and a bearing surface surrounding the shaft, a groove between the shaft and bearing surface, said groove being slanted relative to said axis and having inner and outer circumferential walls substantially parallel to said axis, said sealing ring having a base portion and a bifurcated sealing portion that includes radially inner and outer sealing lips, said ring in its free state having radially inner and outer surfaces along said base portion and sealing portion that are generally frusto-conical, said sealing ring being received in said groove in a deformed state due to contact of said base and sealing portions with said groove inner and outer circumferential walls whereby said radially inner and outer surfaces of said sealing ring are generally parallel with said longitudinal axis and said lips are in said sealing contact with said circumferentially inner and outer walls of said groove.
