A combustion apparatus utilizing an auger having an integral air supply system. The apparatus includes a cylindrical combustion chamber containing a rotatable auger. Waste is delivered to one end of the combustion chamber and is conveyed through the chamber by the auger, and ash and the non-combustible residue is discharged from the opposite end while the waste gases are discharged through a cyclone separator to remove fly ash. The auger is composed of a tubular shaft and a hollow spiral flight. Air is introduced into the downstream end of the shaft and flows through the hollow flight and exits through outlet holes in the flight into the combustion chamber. A portion of the air is introduced into the mass of waste being conveyed by the auger to provide primary air for combustion, while a second portion of the air is discharged from the flight into the upper zone of the combustion chamber above the level of the waste, to provide secondary combustion of the waste gases.
A combustion apparatus, comprising a housing defining a combustion chamber, an auger mounted for rotation within the combustion chamber and including a shaft and a hollow spiral flight connected to the shaft, said flight having an interior passage extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight, port means in said flight for providing communication between said passage and the combustion chamber, air supply means for supplying air to said passage, said air being discharged through said port means into said combustion chamber, drive means for rotating the auger, feed means for introducing waste material into said combustion chamber, burning means for igniting the waste material in said combustion chamber, gas discharge means for removing gases from the combustion chamber, and non-combustible discharge means for discharging the non-combustible residue from the combustion chamber.
In a combustion apparatus for burning waste materials, a housing defining a combustion chamber to burn waste material, an auger mounted for rotation in the combustion chamber and disposed to convey the waste material through said combustion chamber and discharge the non-combustible residue from the downstream end of said combustion chamber, said auger including a shaft and a hollow spiral flight connected to the shaft, said flight having an interior passage extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight, port means in said flight for providing communication between said passage and the combustion chamber, said port means comprising a plurality of ports disposed in the peripheral portion of said flight and spaced along a substantial portion of the length of the flight, and air supply means for supplying air to said passage, said air being discharged through said port means into said combustion chamber, a portion of the air being discharged into the mass of waste material in said combustion chamber as the auger rotates, and a second portion of the air being discharged into the upper portion of the combustion chamber above the level of the waste material therein to burn the combustible waste gases in a secondary combustion zone.
A screw conveyor means for moving debris through an elongate combustion chamber while delivering air for combustion of the debris and comprising an elongate hollow shaft means mounted for rotation and penetrated by longitudinally spaced apart air flow openings, drive means for rotating said shaft means, thread means spiraled about said shaft means for engaging debris upon rotation of said shaft means and thereby for moving engaged debris, and fan means operatively communicating with said shaft means for impelling air flow therethrough, said thread means defining a hollow interior operatively communicating with said shaft means for receiving air flow impelled therethrough and for directing air to impinge onto debris engaged by said thread means and cooperating with said shaft means and said fan means for distributing air flowing through said shaft means therealong and thereby facilitating combustion of debris moved by said conveyor means.
In a combustion apparatus for burning waste materials, a housing defining a combustion chamber to burn waste material, an auger mounted for rotation in the combustion chamber and disposed to convey the waste material through said combustion chamber and discharge the non-combustible residue from the downstream end of said combustion chamber, said auger including a shaft and a hollow spiral flight connected to said shaft, said flight having an interior passage extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight, port means in said flight for providing communication between said passage and the combustion chamber, air supply means for supplying air to said passage, said air being discharged through said port means to said combustion chamber, said flight having a second passage extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight, means for introducing a cooling medium into said second passage to thereby cool the flight, and means for discharging the cooling medium from said second passage.
In a combustion apparatus for burning waste materials, a housing defining a combustion chamber to burn waste material, an auger mounted for rotation in the combustion chamber and disposed to convey the waste material through said combustion chamber and discharge the non-combustible residue from the downstream end of said combustion chamber, said auger including a shaft and a hollow spiral flight extending outwardly from the shaft, said flight having a first interior passage extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight and having a second interior passage separate from said first passage and extending a substantial portion of the length of said flight, port means in said flight for providing communication between said first passage and the combustion chamber, said shaft having an axial passage, closure means in said axial passage and dividing said axial passage into a downstream section and upstream section, first opening means providing communication between said downstream section and said first passage, second opening means providing communication between the upstream section and said second passage, air supply means for supplying air to said downstream section, said air being discharged through said first opening means into said first passage and then through said port means to said combustion chamber, cooling supply means for supplying a cooling medium to said upstream section, said cooling medium passing through said second opening means to said second passage to cool the auger, and means connected to said second passage for discharging cooling medium from said second passage.
