Abstract
3-Aryl-isoxazol-5-yl benzoic acid and salts thereof are prepared by base treatment of 3'-(Aryl)-spiro[isobenzofuran-1(3H),5'(4'H)-isoxazol]-3-one.

A process for preparing a salt of 3-Aryl-isoxazol-5-yl-benzoic acid which comprises reacting a spiro compound having the formula ##STR4## with a base having a pK.sub.A of 11 or more, in the presence of a water-miscible solvent.
