Abstract
A penicillin is treated with a peroxymonosulfate at a temperature of from about 0.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C. in an aqueous medium to produce a penicillin sulfoxide.
Claims12
A process for oxidizing a penicillin to a penicillin sulfoxide, said penicillin having the formula ##STR4## in which R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of phenoxyacetyl, benzoyl, thienyl-2-acetyl, phenylglycyl, and hydrogen;
- and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkali metal cation, and a carboxylic acid protecting group;
- which comprises contacting said penicillin in an aqueous medium at a temperature of from about 0.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C. with a peroxymonosulfate under conditions such that the pH of the resulting mixture is maintained within the range from about 2 to about 6.
