Abstract
A pair of very thin dielectric films, each completely metallized on one side, are positively advanced over a pair of drums of a machine while the films are laser scribed and slit to form two sets of film strips each of which has a laser scribed capacitor plate formed thereon. The film strips forcibly emanating from the drums pass through a number of tension responsive devices and are wound on one of a pair of successively positioned takeup split mandrels. A compensating mechanism is included in one of the drum drives to vary the speed of the drums to compensate for the difference in diameters of the wound convolutions of one set of film strips with respect to the other set so that a succession of capacitor blanks are snugly wound with consistent geometric size and capacitance value.
Claims29
A machine for processing a film having one surface thereof provided with a metallic coating, which comprises:
- a drum;
- roller means positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the drum for guiding the film to ride over and engage a portion of the periphery of said drum with metallic coating being exposed;
- means for rotating the drum;
- a pinch roller means for forcing the film against the periphery of the rotating drum to advance and dispense the film;
- means acting on the metallic coating as the film passes over the periphery of the drum for removing a portion of the metal coating from the exposed metallic coating to form a demetallized pattern defining line in the metallic coating;
- a mandrel for receiving the film emanating from said drum;
- and
- means for rotating said mandrel independently of the drum rotating means to wind the film with a constant tension being imparted to successively wound convolutions.
A capacitor winding machine, which includes:
- a mandrel;
- means for guiding two strips of film to said mandrel, each of said film having one metallized surface;
- means for rotating said mandrel to simultaneously wind said metallized films in overlaying relation with the metallized surface of each film engaging the unmetallized surface of the other film as the films approach the mandrel;
- a means for generating a pair of laser beams;
- a first optical system for directing a first of said laser beams onto the metallized surface of a first of said metallized films to remove a line of the metal from said first metallized surface;
- a second optical system for directing said second beam onto the metallized surace of the second of said metallized films to remove a line of metal from said second metallized surface;
- and
- means for moving the first and second optical systems to shift the laser beams to remove lines on the respective first and second metallized films which are in overlaying relationship upon the films being wound on the mandrel at the initial and final windings of said films, and for shifting said first and second optical systems to remove lins of metal along opposed marginal edges of the respective first and second metallized films upon the films wound on the mandrel between the initial and final windings.
A machine for winding capacitor blanks from two strips of material having one surface thereof metallized, which includes:
- a mandrel;
- a first drum for advancing a first metallized film thereover with the unmetallized surface engaging said first drum;
- a second drum for advancing a second metallized film thereover with the unmetallized surface engaging said second drum;
- means for guiding said films from said drums to said mandrel;
- means for rotating the mandrel to simultaneously wind the films in overlaying relationship with the metallized surface of each film engaging the non-metallized surface of the other film;
- means for laser scribing the metallized surfaces of the films passing over the drum to form a pair of metal-free lines on each of said metallized surfaces of said films;
- means for positioning and shifting said laser scribing means to form lines that are initially in the same relative positions on the respective films, diverge in opposed paths, continue in said opposed paths, and then reconverge into said same relative positions;
- and
- means for slitting said films passing over said drums to form pairs of film strips, each of which includes one of said scribed lines.
A machine for winding a pair of capacitor blanks, which comprises:
- a first drum;
- means for supplying a first metallized film to said first drum;
- means for guiding the first film over a portion of the peripheral surface of said first drum with the metallized surface of the film being exposed;
- means for pressing the first film against the peripheral surface of said first drum;
- means for rotating the drum;
- means for laser scribing the first metallized film initially along a pair of first lines, diverting the scribing along a pair of second lines, and then rediverting the scribing along the first lines.
- means positioned after the laser scribing means for slitting the film passing over the engaged portion of the drum to form four strips of film with the scribed lines appearing in a first pair of film strips while a second pair of film strips is formed with unscribed surfaces;
- a second drum;
- means for supplying a second metallized film to said second drum;
- means for driving the second drum, laser scribing and slitting the second film in the same manner as defined with the aforesaid means set forth with respect to the first drum except the direction of diverting and rediverting the scribed lines on the second pair of film strips is in a direction opposite to that described with respect to the scribing of the first metallized film;
- and
- means for simultaneously winding each of said first pairs of film strips with one of the second pair of film strips so that the initial and rediverted scribed lines are in overlaying relation and the second scribed lines of each pair of wound film strips run along opposed edge margins of the respective film strips.
