Abstract
A process for preparing a diester of oxalic acid which comprises bringing carbon monoxide into contact with an ester of nitrous acid in the liquid phase, in the presence of metallic palladium or a salt thereof, preferably with introduction of a gas containing molecular oxygen into the reaction system, more preferably with further incorporation of an alcohol in the reaction system.
Claims6
A process for preparing a diester of oxalic acid which comprises contacting carbon monoxide with an ester of nitrous acid in the liquid phase in the presence of metallic palladium or a salt thereof under a partial pressure of carbon monoxide of 5 to 200 atm. at a temperature of 20.degree. to 150.degree. C., said ester of nitrous acid being an ester of nitrous acid with an alcohol having 1 to 20 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of a saturated monohydric aliphatic alcohol, a saturated dihydric aliphatic alcohol, an alicyclic alcohol and an aralkyl alcohol, to produce said diester of oxalic acid containing the same ester group as that of said ester of nitrous acid.
