Abstract
An improved process for the preparation of benzaldehyde by hydrolysis of benzal chloride wherein hydrolysis is carried out at an elevated temperature in the presence of an excess of aqueous hydrochloric acid and in the absence of another catalyst.
Claims3
In a process for the preparation of benzaldehyde by the hydrolysis of benzal chloride, the improvement which comprises carrying out the hydrolysis at a temperature of 100.degree. to 200.degree. C. under normal pressure or under increased pressure in the presence of aqueous hydrochloric acid such that the amount of water in the hydrochloric acid is 10 to 25 times the stoichiometric amount required for the saponification of benzal chloride, the hydrochloric acid having a concentration of 10 to 35 percent by weight, the process being carried out in the absence of another catalyst.
