Abstract

A novel process for the preparation of biotin is disclosed wherein said process employs inexpensive starting materials and reagents resulting in the obtention of biotin devoid of the biologically inactive stereoisomers.

A compound of the formula:

##STR23## wherein Q is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, --COR.sub.4, --COCX.sub.3 and tosyl where R.sub.4 is lower alkyl and X is halogen, the racemates and optical antipodes thereof.
