Abstract
A polyvinyl chloride surface, such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride telephone cord jacket, is coated with a coating formulation comprising a medium molecular weight methyl methacrylate copolymer, cellulose acetate butyrate and a carbalkoxy benzyl phthalate plasticizer. The coating affords good adhesion, fast drying and stain resistance.
Claims19
An electrical cord having a plasticized polyvinyl chloride jacket and at least one conductor surrounded thereby wherein said jacket has a coating thereon, said coating resulting from drying of a coating formulation comprising a binder having from (a) 75-90 weight percent of a medium molecular weight copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethylhexylacrylate, (b) 5-15 weight percent cellulose acetate butyrate and (c) 5-10 weight percent carbalkoxy benzyl phthalate plasticizer.
A telephone cord having a plasticized polyvinyl chloride jacket, said jacket having a 3/4 to 11/4 mil coating therein, said coating resulting from drying of a coating formulation including a binder and solvent, said binder consisting of (a) 75-90 weight percent of a medium molecular weight methyl methacrylate copolymerized with ethyl hexyl acrylate, (b) 5-15 weight percent cellulose acetate butyrate having a viscosity of from 1.9 to 2.1 poise and (c) 5-10 weight percent plasticizer derived from the condensation of benzyl phthalate with an ester obtained from the condensation of isobutyric acid and trimethylpropanediol.
A method of coating a plasticized polyvinyl chloride surface comprising:
- (a) applying to said surface to be coated, a coating formation comprising a binder, a first solvent and a second solvent, said binder comprising (a') 75-90 weight percent of a medium molecular weight copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethylhexylacrylate, (b') 5-15 weight percent cellulose acetate butyrate and (c') 5-10 weight percent of a carbalkoxy benzyl phthalate plasticizer;
- and
- (b) drying said coating formulation.
A method of coating a telephone cord having a plasticized polyvinyl chloride jacket comprising:
- (a) applying to said surface to be coated a basic coating formulation diluted in a second solvent, said basic coating formulation including a binder and a solvent, said binder comprising (1) from 75-90 weight percent of a medium molecular weight copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl hexyl acrylate, (2) 5-15 weight percent cellulose acetate butyrate having a viscosity of from 1.9 to 2.1 poise, and (3) 5-10 weight percent of a plasticizer which can be derived by condensing benzyl phthalate and the esters of the condensation of isobutyric acid and trimethylpentanediol, said solvent comprising toluene and ethyl acetate having a resistivity of at least 20 megohms;
- and
- (b) drying said coating formulation to form a coating having a thickness of from about 3/4 to 1--1/4mils.
