Abstract
A class of .alpha.-branched chain alkyl or alkenyl substituted benzene compounds have excellent repelling activities against numerous noxious insects.
Claims10
A method for repelling an insect which is a member of the order of Thysanura, Orthoptera, Isoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera or Acari, which comprises:
- subjecting said insect to a repelling amount of at least one compound having the formula:
- ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 is an .alpha.-branched chain alkyl or alkenyl radical having 3 to 6 carbon atoms;
- R.sub.2, R.sub.4 and R.sub.6 are each hydrogen, hydroxyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, lower aliphatic acyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxymethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl, --CHO or halogen, but all of R.sub.2, R.sub.4 and R.sub.6 are not hydrogen;
- R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 are each hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, hydroxymethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl or --CHO;
- and when R.sub.4 is hydroxy or 2-hydroxyethyl, all of R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 may not be hydrogen.
