Abstract
Trithio- and tetrathiophosphates with mercaptocarboxylic acid derivatives are preeminently suitable as extreme pressure additives for lubricants. They reduce signs of wear and have no or only an insignificant corrosive action on the parts to be protected.

A lubricant composition comprising a mineral oil, a synthetic lubricant or mixture thereof and 0.01 to 5% by weight, based on the lubricant, of a compound of formula I
- XP(S--C.sub.n H.sub.2n --CO--R).sub.3 (I)
- wherein
- X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom,
- n is an integer from 1 to 6, and
- R represents the group R.sup.1 --O--, wherein R.sup.1 represents alkyl;
- alkoxyalkyl or trimethylcyclohexyl.

A method of improving the lubricant performance of a lubricant composition which comprises
- incorporating into said lubricant composition comprising a mineral oil, synthetic lubricant or mixture thereof from 0.01 to 5% by weight, based on the lubricant, of a compound of formula I
- XP(S--C.sub.n H.sub.2n --CO--R).sub.3 (I)
- wherein
- X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom,
- n is an integer from 1 to 6, and
- R represents the group R.sup.1 --O--, wherein R.sup.1 represents alkyl;
