Abstract
Benzhydryl derivatives of guanidine (Formula I) having blood sugar lowering activity; pharmaceutical hypoglycemic compositions thereof and methods of administering same to hyperglycemic individuals.
Claims9
A pharmaceutical composition in dosage unit form comprising an effective hypoglycemic amount of a member selected from the group consisting of a benzhydryl guanidine derivative having the formula:
- ##STR26## wherein:
- R.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.2 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.3 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, loweralkyl, and cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl,
- Y and Z are each a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo, loweralkyl, preferably methyl, and loweralkyloxy, preferably methoxy and ethoxy;
- and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid salts thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier.
A method of lowering blood glucose levels which comprises internally administering to a hyperglycemic mammal a pharmaceutical composition in dosage unit form comprising an effective hypoglycemic amount of a member selected from the group consisting of a benzhydryl guanidine derivative having the formula:

- R.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.2 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.3 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, loweralkyl, and cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl,
- Y and Z are each a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo, loweralkyl, and loweralkyloxy;
- and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier.
A compound selected from the group consisting of a benzhydryl guanidine derivative having the formula:
- ##STR28## wherein:
- R.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.2 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl,
- R.sub.3 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, loweralkyl, and cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl;
- Y and Z are each a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo, loweralkyl, and loweralkyloxy;
- and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
A compound selected from the group consisting of N-benzhydryl-N',N'-diethylguanidine and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
A compound selected from the group consisting of N-benzhydryl-N'-cyclopentyl-N'-methylguanidine and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
