Abstract
A selective composite diaphragm is provided comprising a ion-exchange membrane having at least one microporous layer joined to it, whereby the microporous layer is of high, homogeneous porosity and is preferably at least as thick as the membrane. Said diaphragm is particularly useful for electrolysis of sodium chloride, enabling pure concentrated alkaline solution to be obtained with a high yield.
Claims15
A selective diaphragm for an electrolytic cell comprising an ion-exchange, permselective, water-insoluble polymeric membrane having a microporous layer of highly homogeneous porosity intimately adherent to at least one surface of said membrane, said ion-exchange, permselective, water-insoluble polymeric membrane having ion-exchanging radicals and being selected from the class consisting of cation-exchange membranes and anion-exchange membranes and said microporous layer having pores having hydraulic diameters of between about 0.1 and 30 microns.
