Abstract
The following specification describes a paint can mold in which a pair of concentric ring members and cores at diametrically opposed positions create concentric mold cavities for forming projecting bushings on the pail, each having a concentric handle bearing. The plastic for forming each bearing and a handle interconnecting the bearings passes through a gate in each ring member. Withdrawal of the ring member severs the plastic in the gate from between the bushing and bearing so that the handle is free to rotate on the bushings. Means are provided to prevent disassembly of the handle from the can.
Claims26
A mold assembly having a passage for forming a pivot assembly, the improvement comprising:
- movable insert ring means having inner and outer surfaces and received in said passage to define a first annular bearing surface adjacent the outer surface of said insert ring means and a second annular bearing surface adjacent the inner surface of said insert ring means,
- and movable means in said passage to define with said insert ring means a retaining mold cavity in spaced axial communication with one of said bearing surfaces and extending
- radially from the one bearing surface to a position radially intercepting the other bearing surface for forming bearing retaining means secured to said one bearing surface adapted to be flexed radially toward said one surface in response to the movement of said movable means in one direction and the successive movement of said ring insert means from between said bearing surfaces in said one direction for first engaging said retaining means and thereafter disengaging said retaining means to enable said retaining means to flex radially from said one surface to said position radially intercepting the other bearing surface for limiting relative axial movement between said bearing surfaces.
A mold assembly having a first passage for forming a pivot assembly attached to an article formed in a mold article cavity communicating with one end of said first passage, the improvement comprising;
- movable first insert ring means having inner and outer surfaces and received in said passage from the other end to define with said passage a first annular mold bearing cavity for forming a first bearing having a first bearing surface adjacent the outer surface of said ring insert means and a second bearing mold cavity in communication with said mold article cavity for forming a second bearing in attached relationship to said article at said one end and having a second bearing surface adjacent the inner surface of said insert ring means,
- and movable first insert core means received in said passage from said other end to define with said ring means a mold cavity in spaced axial communication with said second bearing cavity in spaced axial communication with said second bearing cavity to define a bearing retaining cavity radially intercepting said first bearing cavity for forming resilient retaining means secured to said second bearing and adapted to flex radially toward said second bearing in response to the movement of said movable insert means in said other direction and the successive movement of said ring insert means from between said bearing surfaces in said other direction and thereafter flexing to a position radially intercepting the axial movement of said first bearing in said other direction.
A mold assembly for molding a plastic pail having an attached, freely pivotable handle, the improvement comprising:
- a cup shaped mold assembly having an annular wall extending from a back wall,
- a separable split ring for the open end of said annular wall,
- a core assembly received by said ring in annular wall to define therebetween a cup shaped cavity for forming an annular wall in an annular cavity of said cup shaped cavity,
- said cup shaped mold assembly and split ring defining therebetween a peripheral, cross-sectionally L-shaped cavity formed with one leg of said L-shaped cavity in communication with the annular cavity and extending radially outwardly from the annular cavity, and the other leg of said L-shaped cavity extending axially of said annular cavity for forming a skirt wall spaced radially outwardly of said annular wall,
- diametrically opposed passages formed between said cup shaped assembly and said ring with each diametrically opposed passage in communication with said other leg of said L-shaped cavity,
- and insert assembly for each passage movable into the respective passage toward said annular cavity with each insert assembly comprising means for defining spaced concentric chambers in the respective passages, said opposed passages being adapted to form integral retaining means spaced to cause concentric bearings molded in said chamber to be formed in interlocking relationship, said insert assembly being adapted to be retracted from the respective passages,
- and a bail cavity formed between said cup shaped assembly and said ring for forming a bail integrally interconnecting one concentric bearing in each passage.
In a mold, pivot assembly making apparatus which comprises:
- means defining a mold chamber for said pivot assembly;
- a ring member positionable in said mold chamber to define a pair of spaced mold cavities inside and outside of said ring member, and means for inserting and withdrawing said ring member from the mold chamber;
- means for conveying material to be molded into said mold chamber;
- and means for causing the separate members molded in said spaced mold cavities to be in interlocking, relatively pivotable relationship to prevent them from separating from each other.
