A peck-drilling apparatus for quill feed units of the type having a frame member and a tool quill of the type adapted for reciprocative movement with respect to said frame member, together with the usual means to rapidly advance a tool toward a workpiece preparatory to performing a machining operation thereon, means to slowly advance the tool while said machining operation is taking place, and means to rapidly retract said tool at the conclusion of said machining operation, wherein a peck-drilling operation is accomplished by providing a plurality of cam mounting bars fixedly mounted to the tool quill parallel to the axis of reciprocation and having various cams mounted thereon, said cams adapted to operate limit switches fixedly mounted to frame member as they pass thereby. The limit switches, together with a timer, are connected to the various operating means to rapidly advance the tool quill to the workpiece, feed the tool quill at a slow rate of speed for a time interval preset on the timer, and then to rapidly retract the tool quill to its original starting position and there-upon to return it to where the tool just finished cutting previously and again feed the tool for the preset time interval, and to repeat this cycle until the desired depth of cut is reached.
An improvement in a mechanical quill feed unit of the type having a frame member, a tool quill of the type adapted for reciprocative movement with respect to said frame member and having electro-mechanical tool rotating means, electromechanical means to rapidly advance a tool toward a workpiece preparatory to performing a machining operation thereon, to slowly advance the tool while said machining operation is taking place and to rapidly retract said tool at the conclusion of said machining operation, the improvement comprising a peck-drilling apparatus including means to cause said electro-mechanical rapid advance means to advance the tool quill to a predetermined adjustable starting position and to thereupon turn off said electro-mechanical rapid advance means upon reaching said starting position, electro-mechanical means to feed said tool quill at a slow feed rate until the expiration of a predetermined time interval, electro-mechanical means to return said tool quill to its original starting position immediately after the expiration of said time interval, and to immediately rapidly advance it to its position at the expiration of said time interval to reflect the advance of said tool quill during said time interval, and to repeat the peck-drilling cycle until the desired depth of cut, as represented by the forward movement of the tool quill is reached, and electro-mechanical means to thereupon return said tool quill to its original position to await the beginning of another cycle, said electro-mechanical means to cause said rapid advance means to rapidly advance said tool quill to said predetermined adjustable starting position including a cam mounting bar fixedly mounted to said tool quill on an axis parallel to the axis of reciprocation thereof in close proximity to said frame member, a special slideable cam mounted for movement along said cam mounting bar, a mounting block fixedly mounted to said frame member and having a plurality of guideways therein parallel to said cam mounting bar, with said cam mounting bar passing through one of said guideways, a slideable cam mounted in at least one other of said guideways and adapted for movement by said special slideable cam and having a recessed portion therein, a first limit switch mounted perpendicular to said slideable cam and being adapted to be operated by said recessed portion, said limit switch being operably connected to said rapid advance means and being adapted to rapidly advance said tool quill until said special slideable cam contacts and moves said slideable cam and causes said first limit switch to turn off said rapid advance and reactivate said feed means for said predetermined time.
At least one mechanical quill feed unit for advancing and rotating a tool along an axis comprising a frame member, a moveable but non-rotatable tool quill having a tool rotating means mounted thereon and adapted for reciprocative movement with respect to said frame member along said axis, said tool quill being connected to said frame member by a reversible ball-screw assembly comprising a rotatable ball-screw and an inter-engaging sleeve means coaxial with said axis, with the forward end of said sleeve means being connected to said tool quill, and said ball-screw being rotatably connected to said frame member, a tool holder coaxial with said axis connected to the output of said tool rotating means, a tool rotating operating means connected to the input of said tool rotating means, said tool rotating means including a pair of gears located in said tool quill, said gears lying in a plane perpendicular to said axis and being immediately adjacent said tool holder, with one of said gears being directly connected to said tool holder, said tool rotating operating means including a hollow splined slip-shaft means drivingly connecting said other of said gears to said slip-shaft, said slip-shaft being offset from said axis, a drive shaft drivingly connected to said hollow slip-shaft, and a drive motor operatively connected to said driveshaft, said tool quill also having a tool quill control means to rapidly advance said tool quill toward a workpiece preparatory to performing a machining operation thereon, means to feed said tool quill at a controlled rate of speed while said machining operation is being performed, and to rapidly retract said tool quill to its original position when the machining operation is completed, and including means to perform a peck-drilling operation on a workpiece, wherein said peck-drilling apparatus includes means to cause said rapid advance means to advance the tool quill to a predetermined adjustable starting position, and to thereupon turn off said rapid advance means upon reaching said starting position, means to feed said tool quill at a slow feed rate until the expiration of a predetermined time interval, means to return said tool quill to its original starting position immediately after the expiration of said time interval and to immediately rapidly advance it to its position at the expiration of said time interval to reflect the advance of said tool quill during said time interval, and to repeat the peck-drilling cycle until the desired depth of cut, as represented by the forward movement of the tool quill is reached, and means to thereupon return said tool quill to its original position to await the beginning of another cycle.
