Abstract
A composition suitable for the protection of corrodible metal surfaces which comprises a binder and a filler. The filler is constituted of a mixture of a comminuted refractory ferro alloy and a non-metallic inhibitor such as zinc chromate or zinc yellow, the latter being present in an amount sufficient to enhance the corrosion protection and weldability of the coated metal surfaces. Various binders, both inorganic and organic, may be used and the filler is preferably a mixture of a major amount of ferrophos (Fe.sub.2 P) and a minor amount, e.g., about 10 percent by weight of the filler, of zinc yellow.
Claims23
A weldable article having a metal surface, coated with a composition which comprises about 3 to about 80 percent by weight of a binder and about 20 to about 97 percent by weight of a filler, the filler being comprised of a major amount of a comminuted refractory ferro alloy and a minor amount of a non-metallic corrosion inhibitor selected from the group consisting of chromates, nitrites, phosphates, molybdates, tungstates, silicates and benzoates.
A weldable article having a metal surface coated with a composition which comprises about 3 to about 80 percent by weight of a binder and about 20 to about 97 percent by weight of a filler, the filler being comprised of a major amount of a comminuted refractory ferro alloy selected from ferromanganese, ferromolybdenum, ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferrovanadium, ferrozirconium, ferrotitanium, ferrotungsten, ferroboron, ferrophosphorus and iron carbide and a minor amount of a non-metallic corrosion inhibitor selected from zinc chromate, zinc yellow, lead silicon-chromate, zinc molybdate, iron phosphate, potassium dichromate, sodium phosphate, calcium tungstate, aluminum silicate, zinc pyrophosphate, lithium dichromate, aluminum benzoate, stannous nitrite and mixtures thereof.
A method of forming a weldable corrosion protective coating on a metal substrate which comprises contacting the metal substrate with a composition which comprises about 3 to about 80 percent by weight of binder and about 20 to about 97 percent by weight of a filler, the filler being comprised of a comminuted refractory ferro alloy and a minor amount of a non-metallic corrosion inhibitor selected from the group consisting of chromates, nitrites, phosphates, molybdates, tungstates, silicates and benzoates, and forming a coating of said composition on the substrate.
