Abstract
A dual temperature exchange system, wherein, inter alia, the feed supply substance traverses selected portions of one of the two temperature zones, said selected portions being correlated with the availability and/or cost of a supply of the feed substance concerned is disclosed, and in connection therewith also disclosed is an improved system for humidification and dehumidification of a gaseous flow by effecting evaporation of a vaporizable liquid thereinto with the aid of heat recovered from the subsequent condensation from said gaseous flow of vaporized liquid carried thereby.
Claims22
A heat recovering evaporation-condensation process that produces, from a liquid containing a relatively non-volatile substance dissolved therein, a more concentrated solution of said substance and condensate of said liquid, which process comprises in combination:
- (a) heating a flow of gas chemically different from said liquid and vaporizing thereinto said liquid to be carried thereby,
- (b) thereafter subjecting said flow to treatment comprising further heating said flow and adding a further quantity of vapor of said liquid thereto, and
- (c) subsequently cooling said flow and condensing said liquid therefrom
- which combination further comprises
- (d) effecting said heating and vaporizing step (a) in a first zone,
- (e) effecting said cooling and condensing step (c) in a third zone and removing from said third zone said gas flow and liquid condensate.
- (f) effecting said treatment step in a second zone,
- (g) passing said flow in sequence through said first, second and third zones,
- (h) bringing an amount of said liquid containing a concentration of said dissolved substance in solution therein into physical contact with said flow of gas in said first zone, said amount comprising a first quantity of said liquid that is vaporized into said gas in said first zone and a second quantity of said liquid which is not so vaporized, whereby said dissolved substance forms in said second quantity of liquid a more concentrated solution in said first zone.
- (i) obtaining heat for effecting the heating and vaporizing in said first zone from the cooling and condensation in said third zone and transferring such heat to the flow in said first zone from the flow in said third zone by way of a countercurrent indirect contact heat exchange while maintaining said flows out of contact with each other,
- (j) withdrawing said second quantity of more concentrated solution from said first zone, and
- (k) recycling a portion of said withdrawn second quantity of more concentrated solution to comprise a part of said amount of liquid brought into said physical contact in step (h).
An improved heat recovering evaporation-condensation method that comprises, in combination, the steps of
- (a) forming a first flow of gas,
- (b) heating said first flow and vaporizing thereinto to be carried thereby vapors of a vaporizable liquid substance chemically different from said gas to form an augmented gaseous flow;
- (c) subjecting said augmented flow to treatment comprising further heating said augmented flow while in contact with an amount of said liquid and increasing its content of vapor of said liquid to form a treated flow, and
- (d) thereafter cooling said treated flow to condense therefrom vapors of said vaporizable liquid substance carried therein;
- wherein the improvement comprises:
- (e) in forming said augmented flow in step (b), bringing said gaseous flow and a liquid flow of said second substance into physical contact in a first zone and supplying heat thereto in said first zone, said liquid flow containing a concentration of a dissolved salt substance in solution therein and comprising a first quantity of said liquid equal to that vaporized in step (b) and a second quantity of said liquid not so vaporized, whereby said dissolved substance forms a more concentrated solution thereof in said second quantity of liquid,
- (f) forming said treated flow in step (c) in a second zone,
- (g) in step (d), extracting heat from said treated flow in a third zone, and removing from said third zone the gaseous flow and the liquid condensate condensed therefrom, and
- (h) transferring the heat extracted in the cooling and condensation in step (g) from the third zone to the first zone, to constitute the heat supplied for the heating and vaporizing of step (e) therein, by way of a counter-current indirect contact heat exchange, while
- (i) maintaining the flows in said first and third zones out of contact with each other,
- (j) withdrawing from said first zone said second quantity of liquid solution, and
- (k) recycling a portion of said withdrawn second quantity of liquid to constitute a part of the liquid flow brought into said physical contact in step (e).
