Abstract
The tie-down properties of multifilament surgical sutures are improved by coating the suture with an absorbable composition comprising a poly(alkylene oxalate) wherein the alkylene is a C.sub.6 or a mixture of C.sub.4 to C.sub.12 alkylene moieties. Braided sutures coated with from about 1 to 15 percent by weight of the composition are characterized by a smooth knot tie-down under both wet and dry conditions.
Claims33
A synthetic, multifilament suture having improved tie-down properties, said suture being coated with from about 1 to 15 percent by weight of a composition comprising a poly(alkylene oxalate) wherein the alkylene is C.sub.6 or a mixture of C.sub.4 - to C.sub.12 -alkylene moieties, said poly(alkylene oxalate) having a melting point below about 100.degree. C and an inherent viscosity of from about 0.1 to 1.2 as determined at 25.degree. C on a 0.1 percent solution of polymer in CHCl.sub.3 or hexafluoroisopropanol.
