Abstract
A method of making grinding wheel mounts by molding a central hub onto a thermoset plastic abrasive disc is provided. An aromatic polycarbonate thermoplastic resin is molded to form a hub on a cured thermoset plastic abrasive disc. It is believed that the polycarbonate forms both a mechanical and chemical bond with the thermoset plastic to provide an efficient method of producing grinding wheels.
Claims25
A method of bonding a phenol-based thermoplastic resin to a cured and molded thermoset phenolic plastic comprising the steps of:
- heating the thermoplastic resin to a temperature between 450.degree. and 550.degree. F;
- heating the thermoset plastic to a temperature between 150.degree. and 200.degree. F;
- and
- pressurizing the thermoplastic resin and thermoset plastic against each other in a pressure range between 1000 and 1200 psi, whereby the thermoplastic resin and the thermoset plastic bond together chemically.
A method of making a composite article comprising the steps of:
- placing a cured and molded thermoset phenolic plastic article in a mold;
- melting a phenol-based thermoplastic resin and introducing it into said mold to intimately contact said article;
- allowing said molten phenol-based thermoplastic resin to cool and solidify such that said resin and said article bond together to form a composite article;
- and
- removing said composite article from said mold, to form a cross-linking chemical bond between the thermoplastic resin and the thermoset phenolic plastic.
A method of bonding a phenol-based thermoplastic resin to a cured and molded thermoset phenolic plastic comprising the steps of:
- placing a cured and molded thermoset phenolic plastic article in a mold;
- melting a phenol-based thermoplastic resin and introducing it into said mold to intimately contact said article;
- allowing said molten phenol-based thermoplastic resin to cool and solidify to form a cross-linking chemical bond between the thermoplastic resin and the thermoset phenolic plastic.
