Abstract

A collator system is disclosed, which allows a collator to operate in two distinct modes: (a) RUN/REJECT; or (b) CYCLE/STOP. Each of the above modes of operation has a unique way of handling sheet feeding malfunctions. The RUN/REJECT mode allows the collator to continue to run, despite a sheet feeding malfunction. The stacks, or portions thereof, having an error are distinctly off-set from properly collated stacks. In the CYCLE/STOP mode, the collator feed is disengaged, and the drum is rotated at slow speed through a partial revolution and then brought to a stop. A pocket of the collating drum is thusly positioned in an operator accessible area, so that the malfunction may be easily corrected. The RUN/REJECT operational mode allows for automatic and continuous operation despite malfunctions, with corrections to improperly collated stacks to be processed after the completed collator run. The CYCLE/STOP operational mode allows the operator to easily correct any feeding malfunctions as they occur.

Dependent claims

A rotary drum collator operating in a RUN/REJECT mode, comprising:

a rotatable drum having a plurality of pockets for storing quantities of sheet material to be collated into sets, said pockets being angularly arranged about said drum;
rotatable withdrawing means disposed adjacent said drum for removing the sheet material from the pockets of said drum;
stacking means disposed adjacent the withdrawing means for stacking sheet material in a stack composed of collated sets positioned in alternately off-set stack sets during normal operation, and stacking miss-collated sheet material in said stack in a reject position differing from the alternately stacked sets when a feeding malfunction is detected, said stacking means including an off-set mechanism having alternating means for alternately actuating and deactuating said off-set mechanism, and program switching means electrically connected to said alternating means for operating said alternating means in a cyclic manner;
sensing means for sensing a malfunction in the feeding of said sheet material and providing a malfunction signal;
and
cycling means operatively connected to said sensing means and said stacking means for controlling the stacking means to stack the sheet material in said reject position in response to a feeding malfunction signal.
