Abstract
Addition compounds of 2- or 5-monoalkyl and 2,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-ones and C.sub.2 -C.sub.9 carbonyl compounds are provided. These addition compounds are useful to impart improved flavoring properties to foodstuffs.
Claims5
A compound of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.3 represents hydrogen or a methyl group and R.sup.4 represents hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.14 alkyl, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkenyl, a benzyl, a furyl or an alkyl substituted furyl radical containing up to 14 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R.sup.4 should not contain more than 4 carbon atoms in case R.sup.3 represents a methyl group.
A process for preparing a compound of the formula ##STR3## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.3 represents hydrogen or a methyl group and R.sup.4 represents hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.14 alkyl, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkenyl, a benzyl, a furyl or an alkyl substituted furyl radical containing up to 14 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R.sup.4 should not contain more than 4 carbon atoms in case R.sup.3 represents a methyl group, comprising reacting a compound of the formula ##STR4## with a carbonyl compound of the formula ##STR5## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 represent groups as indicated above, in a polar solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst.
