Certain N-[poly(hydroxyalkyl)alkyl], 2,4,6-triiodoisophthalamic acids are useful as x-ray contrast agents. A representative compound has the structure ##STR1##

A compound having the formula:
- ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1 is hydroxy, or OM, M being a pharmaceutically acceptable cation,
- R.sup.2 is an acetamido or methoxyacetamido function,
- R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 is a methyl or hydroxymethyl function and each R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 is a hydroxymethyl function
