Abstract
Optionally substituted (2-nitro-3-benzofuranyl)phenylacetic acids which are active as antimicrobial agents, processes for their preparation and intermediates therefor are described.

A compound of the formula ##STR26## wherein X is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or trifluoromethyl, Y is methyl, methoxy or halogen and m and n are independently 0, 1 or 2, or a lower alkyl ester, diethylaminoethyl ester, 2-hydroxyethyl ester, glyceryl ester or methoxymethyl ester or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
A compound of the formula ##STR27## wherein X is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or trifluoromethyl, Y is methyl, methoxy or halogen and m and n are independently 0, 1 or 2, and Q is hydrogen, bromine or iodine, or a lower alkyl ester or pharamaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
