Abstract
Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H, heterocyclic thio, pyridinium, carbamoyloxy or acetoxy; Y is H, Cl, Br, I, nitro, phenyl or methylsulfonyl; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters thereof are effective antibacterial agents.

A compound of the formula ##STR15## wherein the 7-methoxy group occupies the .alpha.-configuration;
- R is ##STR16## Y is H, Cl, Br, I, nitro, phenyl or methylsulfonyl;
- and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, alkyl esters of 1 to 3 carbon atoms thereof, t-butyl ester, benzhydryl ester, haloalkyl esters of 1 to 3 carbon atoms thereof, or acyloxymethyl esters thereof wherein the acyl radical is alkanoyl of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, benzoyl or phenacetyl.
