Abstract
Light weight strong three dimensional luggage shells are produced by heating a glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic sheet containing 5% to 50% by weight glass fibers, and stamping the resultant expanded sheet while still hot between matched male and female cold dies. This is a continuation of application Ser. No. 483,793 , filed June 27, 1974, now abandoned.
Claims5
An article of luggage including in combination a molded three-dimensional self-supporting luggage shell consisting essentially of a glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer sheet containing 5% to 50% by weight glass fibers distributed therein, said shell being covered with a sheet material, said shell having a thickness of approximately 0.04 to 0.06 inch as compressed from an initial sheet stock thickness of about 0.08 to 0.15 inch and said shell having a specific gravity throughout within the range of 0.90 to 1.40, said shell as compressed having a flexural strength within the range of 5,000 to 30,000 pounds per square inch and a notched izod impact resistance within the range of 2 to 15 foot pounds per inch.
