Abstract
A composition comprising tris-(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and dibicyclo [3.1.1] and [2.2.1] heptyl and dibicyclo [3.1.1] and [2.2.1] heptenyl polyamines, their acid addition salts, and mixtures thereof are useful as antimicrobial agents. The composition is particularly useful because of the synergistic improvement obtained against strains of the genus Pseudomonas, as well as other genera.
Claims32
An antibacterial composition comprising an admixture of 1 to 500 parts by weight of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane for each part by weight of a polyamine having the formula:
- ##STR14## where:
- each A is alike or different and is a bicyclic group of the formula:
- a. ##STR15## or a bicyclic group of the formula:
- b. ##STR16## where R is alike or different and is hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, R' is alike or different and is hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl or R' on adjacent carbon atoms taken together comprise an olefinic bond, and the dashed line indicates either saturation or c-, d-, e- unsaturation;
- each R.sub.1 is alike or different and is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkylene:
- each n is alike or different and is the integer 0 to 1;
- Z is ##STR17## where R.sub.5 is hydrogen, aminoethyl, aminopropyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl or C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 dihydroxyalkyl;
- and
- R.sub.6 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl or C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 dihydroxyalkyl;
