Lathe apparatus is disclosed which in one form is an automatic turret lathe in which a single turret head is provided that can support a plurality of tools for performing machining operations on inside and outside surfaces of a workpiece carried on the live spindle of the lathe. The axis of the turret head is disposed at a preferred angular relationship to the axis of the live spindle, and the receiving or mounting surfaces for the inside and outside machining tools are disposed alternately around the axis of the turret head in planar arrangements that provide optimum operating conditions for utilizing the outside and inside machining tools on a single turret head. An attachment for preturning of workpieces is provided which can be mounted on the headstock to perform cutting operations wherein the cutting tool is moved in response to movement of the turret carriage of the turret head. Another attachement is provided to facilitate supporting of the workpiece during the preturning of the workpiece. The lathe apparatus also includes a tailstock construction for synchronous axial adjustment with the live spindle and also to permit pivotal movement of the tailstock relative to the live spindle. An improved automatic feed of bar stock is also provided.
An automatic turret lathe comprising a stationary headstock, a live spindle supported in said headstock for rotational and axial movement relative thereto, a turret carriage adjustably mounted on said headstock for movement perpendicular to the axis of said live spindle, a turret head supported on said turret carriage for indexing movement about an indexing axis, said turret head being oriented so that its indexing axis intersects the live spindle axis at an acute angle and is constructed to have mounted thereon tools for outside and inside machining of workpieces turned by said live spindle.
An automatic turret lathe comprising a headstock, a live spindle supported in said headstock for rotational and axial movement, a turret carriage adjustably mounted on said headstock for movement perpendicular to the axis of said live spindle, a turret head supported on said turret carriage for indexing movement about an indexing axis, said turret head being oriented so that its indexing axis intersects the live spindle axis at an acute angle and is constructed to have mounted thereon tools for outside and inside machining of workpieces turned by said live spindle, and a detachable-preturning device having a bearing carriage guided on said headstock and carrying a tool holder, said bearing carriage being mechanically coupled with said turret carriage for its drive.
An automatic turret lathe comprising a headstock, a live spindle supported in said headstock for rotational and axial movement, a turret carriage adjustably mounted on said headstock for movement perpendicular to the axis of said live spindle, a turret head supported on said turret carriage for indexing movement about an indexing axis, said turret head being oriented so that its indexing axis intersects the live spindle axis at an acute angle and is constructed to have mounted thereon tools for outside and inside machining of workpieces turned by said live spindle, said turret head including tool receivers provided for alternate attachement of outside machining tools and inside machining tools, said tool receivers for the outside machining tools being located on the periphery of the turret head and the tool receivers for the inside machining tools being located perpendicular to the tool receivers for the outside machining tools, said tool receivers each being defined by at least one receiving surface, the receiving surfaces for the outside machining tools when in working position being located in a plane perpendicular to and penetrated by said live spindle axis, and the receiving surfaces for the inside machining tools when in their working position being in a plane parallel to said live spindle axis, guide means overlapping coaxially said live spindle and having a workpiece support portion for supporting a workpiece being rotated by said live spindle adjacent to said plane perpendicular to said live axis.
An automatic turret lathe comprising a headstock, a live spindle supported in said headstock for rotational and axial movement, a turret carriage adjustably mounted on said headstock for movement perpendicular to the axis of said live spindle, a turret head supported on said turret carriage for indexing movement about an indexing axis, said turret head being oriented so that its indexing axis intersects the live spindle axis at an acute angle and is constructed to have mounted thereon tools for outside and inside machining of workpieces turned by said live spindle, a spindle bearing housing defining a sleeve mounted in said headstock so as to be axially displaceable, said live spindle being supported so that it can be driven in rotation in said spindle bearing housing, a tailstock operatively associated with said live spindle including a tailstock sleeve mounted in the headstock parallel to said live spindle so as to be rotatably and axially displaceable, said tailstock sleeve being axially movable synchronously with said live spindle for the same extent of axial travel.
