Abstract
Phosphonoacetic acid derivatives of purine and pyrimidine nucleosides are novel antiviral and/or antineoplastic agents.

A compound of the formula ##STR13## wherein B is selected from (a) the group of nucleobases consisting of adenine, guanine, cytidine, thymidine and uracil or (b) a 5-halopyrimidine;
- X is hydrogen, hydroxy, or ##STR14## Y is hydrogen or ##STR15## and Z is ##STR16## or, when either of X and Y is other than hydrogen or hydroxy, is hydrogen:
- and pharmaceutically acceptable base salts thereof.
