Computerized tomographic apparatus is disclosed wherein respective edge value signals, indicative of the absorption suffered by penetrating radiation, such as X-radiation, on traversing each of a large number of substantially linear paths through a cross-sectional slice of a body, are acquired and processed in order to produce a representation of the absorption of said radiation at many locations distributed over the slice. It is disclosed that the acquisition of said edge value signals can be carried out in a number of different ways and that the processing is effected in accordance with a compensated layer gramming technique. It is also disclosed that the radiation can be periodically interrupted and moreover that the processing is preferably carried out, without transformation of the edge values out of the space domain, on the basis of a store having an address corresponding to each of the said locations and distributing to each address values derived from paths intersecting the corresponding location as well as contributions from other paths which do not intersect the said location, said contributions being dimensioned to compensate for the fact that any path intersecting one location also intersects other locations.
Medical radiographic device for diagnostic examination of a substantially planar region of the interior of the body of a patient, comprising:
Medical radiographic device for diagnostic examination of a substantially planar region of the interior of the body of a patient, comprising:
Medical radiographic apparatus comprising means defining a patient position, a source of a substantially planar, fan-shaped spread of X-radiation, support means supporting said source so that said radiation propagates along a plurality of divergent beam paths through a region of said patient position, scanning means including means for moving said support means, and with it said source, angularly around said patient position through a substantial angle to project said radiation through said region along further beam paths, detecting means for detecting the radiation emergent from said region along each of said beam paths, and said scanning means including means causing relative movement, between said spread of radiation and said detecting means, during said angular movement.
Apparatus for examining a body by means of penetrating radiation such as X or gamma radiation including source means for producing penetrating radiation directed towards the body, collimating means for collimating said radiation in at least one beam, detecting means for receiving said radiation within said beam emergent from the body and for producing an output signal related to the amount of said emergent radiation, first scanning means for causing said at least one beam to assume different angular positions within a sector having its origin at said source, second scanning means for orbiting at least said source and said collimating means about an axis intermediate said source and said detecting means to cause said sector including said at least one beam in its different angular positions to intersect a slice of said body at a plurality of different mean angles with respective to said axis, said detector means providing respective output signals at said angular positions of the beam within said sector for a plurality of different angles of said orbital movement.
Radiographic apparatus comprising a main structure having an opening adapted to receive the body of a patient to be examined, a source of X-radiation for projecting said radiation across said patient opening to the other side from said source, means for detecting radiation projected from said source along a plural number of narrow beam paths in a planar fan, said detecting means including a plural number of detecting elements for producing respective output signals corresponding to said number of divergent beams, and scanning means including first means for angularly displacing said source and said detecting means about an axis passing through the plane of said fan about a point in said opening intermediate said source and said detecting means, and second means for additionally displacing at least said detecting means angularly about the axis of said fan, said first and second means of said scanning means being operative to cause a slice of patient in said opening to be scanned angularly about said first mentioned axis by a fan of radiation including a total number of beams which is a multiple of said first mentioned number.
