Abstract
A process for the manufacture of ##STR1## where R and A are identical or different and each is alky of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, by oxidation of ##STR2## with air, oxygen or mixtures thereof, in an acid medium at a pH of from 1.5 to 5.5, at from 30.degree. to 150.degree. C. The reaction takes place rapidly and gives a good yield of the lactone (I), which can be freed from residual (II) by a treatment with alkali. The compound (I) is used as a dye intermediate in no-carbon copying systems.
Claims10
A process for the manufacture of compounds of the formula ##STR5## where R is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and A is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R and A may be identical or different, wherein compounds of the formula ##STR6## are oxidized with air, oxygen or oxygen-air mixtures in an acid medium, at a pH of from 1.5 to 5.5, in the presence or absence of oxidation catalysts, at from 30.degree. to 150.degree. C.
A process for the manufacture of the compound of the formula ##STR8## wherein the compound of the formula ##STR9## is oxidized with air at atmospheric pressure, in aqueous acetic acid, aqueous propionic acid or mixtures thereof, which contain from 28 to 40% by weight, based on the solution, of acetic acid, propionic acid or both carboxylic acids, at from 60.degree. to 90.degree. C.
