Abstract
A 1,1'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridylium salt is prepared from the corresponding 4,4'-bipyridyl using an alkylsulphate salt as the quaternizing agent.

A method of preparing a 1,1'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridylium salt which comprises interacting a 4,4'-bipyridyl with a quaternizing agent consisting essentially of a 1,1'-disubstituted-4,4'-bipyridylium di(alkylsulphate).
