Abstract
Production of 2-alkyl or 2-cycloalkyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxy pyrimidines by sequentially reacting without isolation of any intermediates in an organic solvent (1) diketene and ammonia to produce .beta.-aminocrotonamide and (2) .beta.-aminocrotonamide, after water removal therefrom, a lower alkanoic or cycloalkanoic acid ester and an alkali metal alkoxide.
Claims8
A process for the preparation of a 2-alkyl or 2-cycloalkyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine of the formula ##STR11## wherein R represents alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and cycloalkyl of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, which comprises sequentially reacting without isolation of intermediates in an organic solvent
- 1. diketene and ammonia to form .beta.-aminocrotonamide and
- 2. said .beta.-aminocrotonamide after removal of the coproduced water, with a lower alkanoic or cycloalkanoic acid ester of the formula
- RCOOR.sub.1
- wherein R represents alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and cycloalkyl of 3 to 6 carbon atoms and R.sub.1 represents lower alkyl of up to 4 carbon atoms and a metal alkoxide of the formula
- MOR.sub.2
- wherein M is an alkali metal and R.sub.2 represents lower alkyl of up to 4 carbon atoms.
