Abstract
Production of 2-alkyl or 2-cycloalkyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxy pyrimidines by first reacting diketene and lower alkanoic or cycloalkanoic acid nitriles in the presence of catalytic amounts of Bronsted or Lewis acids, followed by treating the diketene/nitrile reaction product with ammonia in the presence of acid catalysts.

A process for the preparation of 2-alkyl or 2-cycloalkyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine of the formula ##STR4## wherein R represents alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and cycloalkyl of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, which comprises
- 1. reacting diketene and a nitrile of the formula
- RCN
- wherein R has the same meaning as given above, in an organic solvent at a temperature ranging from about 20.degree. C to 150.degree. C and in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Lewis or Bronsted, acid, and
- 2. reacting the reaction product obtained in the first step with ammonia in an organic solvent at a temperature ranging from about 80.degree. to 150.degree. C and in the presence or absence of a Bronsted acid.
