Abstract
Optionally substituted (2-nitro-3-benzofuranyl)-benzoic acids which are active as antimicrobial agents, processes for their preparation and intermediates therefor are described.

A compound of the formula ##STR26## wherein X is fluorine, chlorine, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, Y is methyl, methoxy, fluorine or chlorine and m and n are independently zero, 1 or 2 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
A compound of the formula ##STR27## wherein X is fluorine, chlorine, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, Y is methyl, methoxy, fluorine or chlorine, m and n are independently zero, 1 or 2 and Q is hydrogen, bromine or iodine.
