Abstract
Coupling elements of slide fastener stringers are deformed by transverse forces of mating elements. The longitudinal spacing of coupling elements is modified by stretching or shrinking tape portions supporting the elements.

- heating the chain to the glass transistion temperature of the thermoplastic material,
- passing the slide fastener chain between first and second pairs of rollers which grip the chain at spaced points,
- driving the first pair of rollers at a constant speed,
- driving the second pair of rollers at a variable speed changed in accordance with a deviation of the number of interlocking spaced engaging elements per unit length sensed at the sensing station from a selected number of interlocking elements per unit length to produce a desired uniform spacing of interlocking engaging elements throughout the length of the slide fastener chain, and
- cooling the slide fastener chain having uniform spacing of interlocking engaging elements.
A method of manufacturing an improved stringer for a slide fastener comprising the steps of

- interengaging the head portions of the spiral coupling member with a mating deforming member;
- and
- forcing the interengaging spiral coupling member and mating deforming member from one interengaging position to another interengaging position where the longitudinal axis of the spiral coupling member is spaced further from the mating member than in the one interengaging position to deform the spiral coupling member by force of the mating deforming member on the spiral coupling member in a direction away from the one edge of the tape.
