Abstract
Compositions useful as lubricants and functional fluids comprise an oleaginous liquid of lubricating viscosity, typically a mineral oil, and a 3-alkoxysulfolane or the like, in which the alkoxy group contains at least about 4 and preferably about 4-25 carbon atoms, as a seal swelling agent.
Claims14
A composition comprising a major amount of an oleaginous liquid of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount, effective to cause swelling of seals in machinery, of a substituted sulfolane of the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrocarbon radical having at least about 4 carbon atoms and each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical.
A composition comprising a major amount of a lubricating oil and a minor amount, effective to cause swelling of seals in machinery, of 3-isodecoxysulfolane.
