Abstract
This invention relates to a process for the preparation of coformycin, 3-(.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl)-6,7,8-trihydroimidazo[4,5-d][1,3]diazepin-8(R)- ol, through a synthetic route from a new derivative of 9.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl-purine and other synthetic intermediates involved in the process and their preparation.

A process for the preparation of a compound of the formula:
- ##STR10## in which Ac represents acetyl which comprises acetylating 9-.beta.-D-ribofuranosylpurine of the formula:
- ##STR11## with an acetylating agent to give the compound of the formula:
- ##STR12## in which Ac represents acetyl and then reacting that compound with methanol under irradiation with ultra-violet light.
