Abstract
Discrete electric-discharge pulses are applied across a dielectric-swept gap between an electrode and a workpiece by triggering an ON-OFF switch between its conductive and nonconductive states in accordance with parameters of the gap so that per pulse adaptive control of the individual machining discharges is effected. An integrator responsive to the gap current, may be used to operate the switch means which may be turned on upon the detection of a pilot discharge. The number of unsatisfactory discharges is detected and, if this number exceeds a predetermined level, is used to control a gap parameter. The integrator signal may be digitalized for accumulation in a counter controlling pulse duration and other parameters.

A method of controlling the machining of a workpiece by the application of machining pulses across a dielectric-swept gap between said workpiece and an electrode spacedly juxtaposed therewith, the method comprising the steps of:
- switching a machining current power supply on and off in circuit with said gap to apply machining discharges thereacross;
- integrating a signal representing the gap current passing through said gap after initiation of a discharge thereacross to produce a control signal;
- and
- effecting the switching of said power supply upon the magnitude of said signal attaining predetermined value, said control signal being produced by converting a signal representing the gap current into a train of digital pulses and integrating said train of digital pulses.
A method of controlling the machining of a workpiece by the application of machining pulses across a dielectric-swept gap between said workpiece and an electrode spacedly juxtaposed therewith, the method comprising the steps of:
- switching a machining current power supply on and off in circuit with said gap to apply machining discharges thereacross;
- integrating a signal representing the gap current passing through said gap after initiation of a discharge thereacross to produce a control signal;
- effecting the switching of said power supply upon the magnitude of said signal attaining predetermined value;
- timing the duration of each machining discharge;
- counting the number of unsatisfactory machining discharges having a duration less than a predetermined duration over a predetermined number of sequential machining discharges;
- and
- modifying a parameter of said gap upon the count of unsatisfactory machining discharges exceeding a predetermined number.
A method of controlling the machining of a workpiece by the application of machining pulses across a dielectric-swept gap between said workpiece and an electrode spacedly juxtaposed therewith, the method comprising the steps of:

- integrating a signal representing the gap current passing through said gap after initiation of a discharge thereacross to produce a control signal;
- effecting the switching of said power supply upon the magnitude of said signal attaining predetermined value;
- timing the duration of each machining discharge;
- counting the number of satisfactory machining discharges having a duration within a predetermined duration range and thereby ascertaining the number of unsatisfactory discharges having a duration outside said range;
- and
- modifying a parameter of said gap upon ascertaining unsatisfactory discharges exceeding a predetermined amount.
In a system for the electric discharge machining of a workpiece by an electrode juxtaposed therewith across a dielectric-filled gap, the improvement which comprises in combination:
- an electric-current source;
