Abstract
Apparatus for positioning the center points of circular arcs for accurately and precisely cutting such arcs in work pieces with band saws and the like. The device includes a base secured to the work support table of the saw and extending away from the saw blade. An arm is mounted at the end of the base, remote from the blade, and is spaced above the base. Also included are means with the arm for movably mounting a trammel point which engages and holds the center of the arc to be cut either on the work piece itself or on a holder therefor to determine the radius of the arc, as well as manual and power means for rotating the work piece about the trammel point.

Apparatus for positioning the center of a circular arc to be cut in a work piece with a band saw or other cutting tool or apparatus, the tool or apparatus being of the type including a work support table and a cutting means positioned to cut through a work piece supported by the work support table when the work piece is fed into engagement with the cutting means from a predetermined direction, and a support for positioning the cutting means, said apparatus comprising:
- base means for engaging the work table of the cutting tool or apparatus and supporting a work piece to be cut, said base means having a first end adapted to fit adjacent the cutting means, a second end remote from the cutting means,
- an arm extending toward the cutting means and support means mounted independently of the cutting means or its support at a fixed position on said second end of said base for supporting said arm in cantilevered fashion spaced above said base and the work piece and for positioning said arm laterally generally perpendicular and at a right angle to said predetermined direction from which the work piece is fed to the cutting means;
- center point determining means on said arm for positioning the center point of the arc of the work piece to be cut against said base means and means for moving said center point determining means toward and away from the cutting means in a direction perpendicular to said cutting means along and over said base means to determine the length of the radius of the arc to be cut in the work piece whereby when the center point of the arc to be cut on the work piece is so positioned, the work piece can be rotated about the center point and into engagement with the cutting means to cut an extremely accurate, precise circular arc in the work piece without causing any movement of the cutting means or its support which would otherwise cause said arc to be inaccurate, untrue or irregular.
Apparatus for positioning the center of a circular arc to be cut in a work piece with a band saw or the like, the saw being of the type including a cutting blade having a cutting edge and extending through a work support table, said apparatus comprising:
- base means for engaging the work table of the saw and supporting a work piece to be cut, said base means having a first end adapted to fit adjacent the saw blade, a second end remote from the blade,
- an arm extending toward said blade and support means mounted at a fixed position on said second end of said base for supporting said arm in cantilevered fashion spaced above said base and the work piece and for positioning said arm laterally generally at a right angle to the plane of said blade;
- center point determining means on said arm for positioning the center point of the arc of the work piece to be cut against said base means and means for moving said center point determining means toward and away from the cutting edge of said blade along and over said base means to determine the length of the radius of the arc to be cut in the work piece whereby when the center point of the arc to be cut on the work piece is so positioned, the work piece can be rotated about the center point to cut an extremely accurate, precise circular arc in the work piece;
- said center point determining means including a trammel point, said means for moving said center point determining means including means for slidably mounting said trammel point on said arm whereby said trammel point is movable along said arm to position said center point of the arc to be cut on the work piece;
- said arm being rigidly secured to said arm support means at said second end of said base, said arm including a pair of parallel, spaced beams defining a slot therebetween extending from said arm support means to a position adjacent said blade cutting edge;
- said trammel point included on a trammel member adjustably mounted in a slide member slidably fitted in said arm slot, said trammel member extending below said arm;
- locking means for locking said trammel member in position to locate said center point;
- said slide member including a T-block having upper flanges slidably engaging the top surfaces of said arm beams, a body portion having a width corresponding to the width of said slot between said beams;
- and an alignment mark on one edge of at least one of said flanges;
- at least one of said beams having a measuring scale formed on its exposed side surface defining the exact lateral distance from the position of the cutting edge of said blade whereby alignment of said alignment mark with a predetermined position on said scale precisely positions said trammel point to define the radius of the arc to be cut in the work piece.
Apparatus for positioning the center of a circular arc to be cut in a work piece with a band saw or the like, the saw being of the type including a cutting blade having a cutting edge, the blade extending through a work support table, and a support for guiding and supporting the blade, said apparatus comprising:
- a base adapted to overlie the work support table of the saw and having a first end adapted to fit adjacent the saw blade, a second end remote from the blade, and means for supporting said base on the work support table;
- an arm extending toward said blade and an arm support located at a fixed position at said second base end, said arm being mounted in cantilever fashion on said arm support independently of the blade and its support such that the arm is spaced above said base and any work piece and is positioned laterally and generally at a right angle to the plane of the blade;
- means for positioning the center of the circular arc to be cut in a work piece including a trammel member having a point thereon, means for slidably moving said trammel member along said arm toward and away from said blade, and means for locking said trammel member in various positions along said arm to determine the radius of the arc to be cut whereby when the trammel point is positioned and establishes the center point of the arc to be cut, the work piece can be rotated about said point against the blade cutting edge to cut an extremely accurate, precise circular arc in the work piece without causing any movement of the blade or its support which would otherwise cause said arc to be inaccurate, untrue, or irregular.
