Abstract
Unique polymers are prepared by the polymerization of high internal phase ratio emulsions of monomers in aqueous systems.
Claims14
A process of emulsion polymerization which comprises forming a high internal phase ratio monomer-in-water emulsion of (1) an emulsion polymerizable monomer containing at least one CH.sub.2 =C<
- group or an emulsion polymerizable mixture of monomers containing at least one CH.sub.2 =C<
- group, (2) an emulsifying agent capable of forming a high internal phase ratio emulsion and (3) water, said monomer or said mixture of monomers being present in said high internal phase ratio monomer-in-water emulsion in an amount of at least 70% by volume of said emulsion, and treating said high internal phase ratio monomer-in-water emulsion under polymerization conditions so as to form the polymer, wherein said emulsifying agent is an oxyalkylated surfactant or a mixture of oxyalkylated surfactants.
