A valve device particularly adapted for remote electrical operation at very low power levels has actuator means which are located outside a valve body but which are operatively connected to a valve member within the body through a flexible diaphragm which seals the valve body without excessively restricting movement of the valve member within the valve body. The actuator means are selectively operable for moving the valve member to open and close the valve. Preferably, at least the flexible diaphragm is exposed to fluid pressures within the valve body so that the valve member is normally moved to closed valve position with selected force in response to these pressures when fluid is introduced into the valve body. The actuator means preferably comprises a wire of a selected nickel-titanium alloy which is secured outside the valve body between the body and the valve operating member, the wire being of selected small diameter to be deformed from an original length to a greater length as the valve member is moved to closed valve position with said force while the wire alloy displays a relatively low modulus of elasticity below a transition temperature. However, the wire abruptly returns to its original length and displays a relatively higher modulus of elasticity to move the valve member to open valve position against this force when the wire alloy is heated above its transition temperature. The disclosed valve device includes means directing electrical current through the small actuator wire at low power levels for selectively heating the wire to operate the valve device.
A valve device comprising body means having an inlet passage and an outlet passage and having valve seat means between said passages arranged to permit fluid flow through said body from said inlet passage through said outlet passage, valve member means mounted on said body means to be freely movable between an open valve position spaced from said valve seat means and a closed valve position engaging said valve seat means in the absence of said fluid flow, said valve member means having at least a first portion thereof disposed in at least one of said passages in a position tending to oppose said fluid flow, said first position of the valve member means being proportioned so that, when a selected level of fluid flow is introduced in said one passage, said valve member means is urged to said closed valve position with selected force in response to said fluid flow and is otherwise substantially free of other forces urging said valve member means to closed valve position, and actuator means of a selected metal alloy secured between said valve member means and said body means to be deformed from an original configuration to a second configuration as said valve member means is moved to said closed valve position with said selected force by said fluid flow while said metal alloy displays a relatively low modulus of elasticity below a transition temperature and to abruptly return to said original configuration and to display a relatively higher modulus of elasticity to move said valve member means to said open valve position against said selected force caused by said fluid flow when said alloy is heated above said transition temperature.
A valve device comprising body means having an inlet passage and an outlet passage and having valve seat means between said passages arranged to permit fluid flow through said body from said inlet passage through said outlet passage, said body means having an aperture communicating with at least one of said passages, valve member means mounted on said body means for movement between an open valve position spaced from said valve seat means permitting said fluid flow and a closed vave position engaging said valve seat means preventing said fluid flow, said valve member means having a first portion extending exteriorly of said body means through said aperture and having at least a second portion thereof disposed in a position in at least one of said passages tending to oppose said fluid flow so that the valve member is responsive to fluid flow introduced therein for normally moving said valve member means to said closed valve position with selected force, flexible diaphragm means secured in sealing relation to said first portion of said valve member means and to said body means around said aperture, actuator means of a selected metal alloy secured between said first portion of said valve member means exteriorly of said body means and an exterior portion of said body means to be deformed from an original configuration to a second configuration as said valve member means is moved to said closed valve position with said selected force by said fluid flow while said metal alloy displays a relatively low modulus of elasticity below a transition temperature and to abruptly return to said original configuration and to display a relatively higher modulus of elasticity to move said valve member means to said open valve position against said selected force caused by said fluid flow when said metal alloy is heated above said transition temperature, and means selectively directing electrical current through said actuator means for selectively self-heating said actuator alloy above said transition temperature.
A valve device comprising a valve body means having an inlet passage and an outlet passage and having a valve seat between said passages arranged to permit fluid flow through said body from said inlet passage through said outlet passage, said body means having an aperture communicating with said inlet passage in alignment with said valve seat;
A method for moving a valve member between open and closed valve positions in a valve passage in response to a selected temperature change, said method comprising the steps of arranging an actuator means of a selected metal alloy to be deformed from an original configuration to a second configuration when the valve member is moved to closed valve position with a selected force while the metal alloy displays a relatively low modulus of elasticity below a transition temperature and to abruptly return to said original configuration and to display a relatively higher modulus of elasticity to move said valve means to open valve position with relatively greater force when the alloy is heated above said transition temperature, and arranging said valve member means within the valve passage to sufficiently oppose fluid flow therein so that, when a selected level of fluid flow is introduced into said passage, the valve member is moved to said closed valve position with said selected force to deform said actuator means of said selected metal alloy from said original configuration to said second configuration.
