A system of subaqueous excavation and material removal having the combination of a hopper dredging vessel, hopper barges with independent dumping capacity and a prime mover vessel such as a tug, each barge having a stern notch and a bow portion which is contoured to be received in a like stern notch of an adjacent barge so that two or more barges can be arranged and affixed into an assemblage, end-to-end with bow portions fitting and secured into the stern notches. The dredging vessel and prime mover vessel also have like bow portions whereby they can connect into the assemblage. Rapid and effective securing of the assemblage, the dredging vessel and prime mover vessel are obtained through pneumatic fenders attached to the sides of the stern notches and a pneumatically controlled cushioning fender couple attached to the stem which is received between vertical expansible fenders at the apex of the stern notch. By expansion of the fender couple and the apex fenders, the vessel is effectively secured to the assemblage. In order to separate the assemblage and the vessel, the fender couple and the tubular members are deflated. Conduits to carry dredged material are located on each barge and the dredging vessel. Each has a tubular outlet extending proximate the bow portion which is received in a larger tubular inlet extending proximate the stern notch, there being an arrangement of annular members about the engaging conduits which are expansible and securely connect the conduits together whereby dredged material may be delivered from the dredging vessel simultaneously to each of the barges in the assemblage.
A barge for combination with a dredger, said barge comprising:
A barge for combination with a dredger, said barge comprising:
A coupling combination between a first vessel and a second vessel which comprises supply means for supplying fluid under pressure, an expansible member composed of a resilient rubber-like material which is firmly attached to said first vessel, conduit means, said expansible member being connected to said supply means by said conduit means, control means operatively associated with said conduit means whereby said expansible means may be selectively and progressively expanded in response to said control means, and slot means defined in said second vessel adapted to receive said expansible member before it is expanded, said expansible member being sufficiently expansible, in response to said control means, in said slot means to dampen relative motion between said vessels in a tongue and groove type interlocking engagement, said slot means in said second vessel being defined by at least a pair of additional, spaced expansible members comprised of rubber-like material.
A coupling combination for a first vessel and a second vessel which comprises a recess included in said first vessel for receiving an end portion of a second vessel, said recess being sufficiently large to provide a clearance around the end portion of said second vessel therein received, a pair of side walls in said first vessel defining said recess, said side walls being substantially parallel near the entry portion of said recess receiving said end portion, a hull portion in said second vessel defining said end portion, at least two expansible members, one of each of said expansible members received in said recess between a said side wall and the adjacent said hull portions, fluid pressure control means connected to each said expansible member for selectively increasing and decreasing the fluid pressure within each said expansible member, whereby when said expansible members are expanded with said end portion of said second vessel received in said recess, said end portion is retained in said recess by the clamping action of said expansible members, fluid supply and conduit means for carrying said fluid supply to each of said expansible members, said fluid supply being on said second vessel, said conduit means and said expansible member being on said first vessel, and detachable connection means being provided for connecting said conduit means and said fluid supply.
A coupling combination between a first vessel and a second vessel comprising:
A damping member for engagement between the bow portion of a pusher vessel and walls defining a recess of a barge, said damping member comprising:
A coupling combination for a first vessel and a second vessel which comprises a recess included in said first vessel for receiving an end portion of a second vessel, said recess being sufficiently large to provide a clearance around the end portion of the second vessel therein received, a pair of side walls in said first vessel defining said recess, said side walls being substantially parallel near the entry portion of said recess for receiving said end portion, a hull portion in said second vessel defining said end portion, at least two expansible members, one of each said expansible members received in said recess between a said side wall and the adjacent said hull portions, said expansible members being tubular and generally vertically disposed, a plurality of further expansible members being disposed in said recess between said side walls and said hull portions, a pair of said further expansible members being secured to the side walls proximate the innermost portion of said recess, an additional expansible member secured to the forward part of said end portion, said pair of further expansible members being spaced apart a sufficient distance to receive said additional expansible member when said pair and said additional expansible members are not expanded and to form an interlocking engagement when said pair and said additional expansible members are expanded, fluid pressure control means connected to each said expansible member for selectively increasing and decreasing the fluid pressure within each of said expansible member, whereby when said expansible members are expanded with such end portion of said second vessel received in said recess, said end portion is retained in said recess by the clamping action of said expansible members.
