Abstract
N-substituted-9-hydroxy-6,7-benzomorphans have been found to possess potent narcotic agonist and/or antagonist activity. In particular, the compound 2'-hydroxy-2-cyclobutylmethyl-5-allyl-9.beta.-hydroxy-9.alpha.-methyl-6,7- benzomorphan has been found to possess potent narcotic agonist and antagonist activity. These compounds are prepared by total synthesis and are not derived from opium alkaloids.

A compound having the formula ##SPC127##
- wherein R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of ##SPC128##
- in which R.sup.6 is H or CH.sub.3, R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of H, (lower)alkyl, (lower)alkanoyl, ##SPC129##
- --CH.sub.2 O--CH.sub.3 and ##SPC130##
- R.sup.3 is H or CH.sub.3, R.sup.4 is n-propyl or (lower)alkenyl;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
A compound having the formula ##SPC140##
- wherein R.sup.1 is H, R.sup.2 is H or (lower)alkyl, R.sup.3 is H or methyl, R.sup.4 is n-propyl or allyl, and R.sup.5 is H;
- or an acid addition salt thereof.
A compound having the formula ##SPC141##
- wherein R.sup.1 is H, R.sup.2 is H or (lower)alkyl, R.sup.3 is H or methyl, R.sup.4 is n-propyl or allyl, and R.sup.5 is H;
- or an acid addition salt thereof.
2-Cyclopropylmethyl-2',9.beta.-dihydroxy-9.alpha.-methyl-5-n-propyl-6,7 -benzomorphan;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
