Abstract
N-phosphonomethyl glycine is produced by the oxidation of N-(phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid. N-(Phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid is heated to an elevated temperature in an aqueous medium and an oxidizing agent (H.sub.2 O.sub.2, air plus a catalyst such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, etc.) added to oxidize the N-(phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid to N-phosphonomethyl glycine, which is recovered by crystallization.
Claims13
A process for the production of N-phosphonomethyl glycine which comprises forming an admixture of N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid, water and a metallic catalyst selected from the class consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium or osmium, heating said admixture to an elevated temperature and contacting said admixture with a free oxygen-containing gas whereby said N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid is oxidized to yield N-phosphonomethyl glycine.
