Abstract
Compositions are disclosed for making thermoplastic adhesives and coatings. The compositions include coal tar pitch and two copolymers of ethylene in which the copolymers are cross-linked with dicumyl peroxide.
Claims4
Method of adhering surfaces comprising
- A. forming an adhesive composition comprising, by weight
- a. about 25 to 50 percent pitch;
- b. about 20 to 40 percent ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer;
- c. about 20 to 40 percent ethylene - acrylic acid copolymer;
- and
- d. about 0.5 to 10 percent dicumyl peroxide into a shape applicable to the surfaces to be joined, at a temperature above the melting temperature of the ethylene polymers;
- B. applying the shaped composition to the surfaces to be joined;
- and
- C. heating the composition to the surfaces to be joined.

Method of joined surfaces comprising
- A. forming a composition comprising
- a. about 25 to 50 percent pitch having a ring-and-ball softening point between about 70.degree.C and 200.degree.C;
- b. about 20 to 40 percent copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate in which the ethylene comprises from 50 to 95 percent by weight;
- c. about 20 to 40 percent copolymers of ethylene and acrylic acid in which the ethylene comprises from 25 percent to about 99.9 percent by weight, having a melt index from about 0.1 to about 400;
- and
- d. about 0.5 to 10 percent dicumyl peroxide;
- into a shape applicable to the surfaces to be joined, at a temperature above the melting temperature of the ethylene polymers;
- B. applying the shaped composition to the surfaces to be joined;
- and
- C. heating the composition to a temperature above the decomposition temperature of dicumyl peroxide.
