Abstract
Described herein are solid compositions of the formula M m'.sub.1.sub.-y M".sub.y X.sub.3 where M is Ba or Sr M' is one or more of Ta and Nb M" is one or more of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rh and Ir X is one or more of S and Se, and Y is 0.33 to 0.5, With the proviso that when M is Sr, the compound is of the formula SrTa.sub.0.5 M".sub.0.5 S.sub.3 and M" is one or more of Cr and Fe. These compositions are useful as semiconductors.

A semiconducting composition with a BaNiO.sub.3 -type hexagonal crystal structure of the formula
- Mm'.sub.1.sub.-y M".sub.y X.sub.3
- where
- M is Ba or Sr,
- M' is one or more of Ta and Nb,
- M" is one or more of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rh and Ir,
- X is one or more of S and Se, and
- y is 0.33 to 0.5,
- with the proviso that, when M is Sr, the compound is of the formula
- SrTa.sub.0.5 M".sub.0.5 S.sub.3
- and M" is one or more of Cr and Fe.
