A wearable garment with motion-activated illumination includes a garment body configured to be worn by a user, an inner layer removably attached to the garment body, and a motion-activated module coupled to the inner layer. The motion-activated module includes a processor, a motion sensor in communication with the processor, and a power source. The motion sensor includes an accelerometer configured to measure linear acceleration along three axes and a gyroscope configured to measure angular velocity along three axes. A plurality of lights are distributed across the inner layer and electrically connected to the motion-activated module. The processor is configured to determine a gravity vector based on accelerometer data, project the angular velocity onto the gravity vector to calculate a spin rate representing rotational velocity about a gravity-referenced axis, and control illumination of the lights based on the calculated spin rate.
