Abstract
In one embodiment, a method is disclosed for providing paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems. The method comprising the RIC using a user equipment (UE) context which is updated on UE movement and calculates the UEs current location. Using this paging is sent in stages where in the first stage paging will be sent to most probable ORAN centralized unit (O-CU)/ORAN distributed unit (O-DU)/ORAN evolved NodeB (O-eNB) that will be having higher possibility of paging to succeed and avoid broadcasting to entire Tracking area(s).

A method of paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems, the method comprising:
- providing, by one or more of a plurality of centralized units (CUs) or evolved NodeBs (eNBs) to the RIC, a UEs mobility information based on which the RIC creates a mobility context and updates the mobility context;
- receiving, by the plurality of CUs or eNBs from the RIC, a policy to forward paging whenever received from an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)/Mobility Management Entity (MME);
- when a paging message is received by any of the plurality of CUs or eNBs, buffering the paging message, starting a timer, and forwarding the paging message to the RIC by the CU or eNB;
- sending stage 1 paging by a plurality of target O-CUs/O-eNBs to corresponding distributed units (DUs)/sectors, wherein the RIC performs an System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (STMSI) lookup, identifies the plurality of target O-CUs/target O-eNBs when the RIC finds the mobility context, and sends corresponding DUs/sectors where paging needs to be sent based on a calculated UE location;
- and
- based on indicating by one of the plurality of target O-CUs/O-eNBs to the RIC about successful paging, receiving notification by the other O-CUs/O-eNBs from the RIC for paging cancellation so that the other O-CUs/O-eNBs discard a buffered paging message upon receiving the indication, wherein the other O-CUs/O-eNBs continue with normal paging when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions for paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems which, when executed, cause a system to perform steps, comprising:
- providing, by one or more of a plurality of centralized units (CUs) or evolved NodeBs (eNBs) to the RIC, a UEs mobility information based on which the RIC creates a mobility context and updates the mobility context;
- receiving, by the plurality of CUs or eNBs from the RIC, a policy to forward paging whenever received from an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)/Mobility Management Entity (MME);
- when a paging message is received by any of the plurality of CUs or eNBs, buffering the paging message, starting a timer, and forwarding the paging message to the RIC by the CU or eNB;
- sending stage 1 paging by a plurality of target O-CUs/O-eNBs to corresponding distributed units (DUs)/sectors, wherein the RIC performs an System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (STMSI) lookup, identifies the plurality of target O-CUs/target O-eNBs when the RIC finds the mobility context, and sends corresponding DUs/sectors where paging needs to be sent based on a calculated UE location;
- and
- based on indicating by one of the plurality of target O-CUs/O-eNBs to the RIC about successful paging, receiving notification by the other O-CUs/O-eNBs from the RIC for paging cancellation so that the other O-CUs/O-eNBs discard a buffered paging message upon receiving the indication, wherein the other O-CUs/O-eNBs continue with normal paging when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC.
A system for paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems, comprising:
- a plurality of centralized units (CUs) or evolved NodeBs (eNBs) coupled to a RIC, each CU or eNB including a processor coupled to a memory, the plurality of CUs or eNBs configured to:
- provide to the RIC a UEs mobility information based on which the RIC creates a mobility context and updates the mobility context;
- receive from the RIC a policy to forward paging whenever received from an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)/Mobility Management Entity (MME);
- when a paging message is received, buffer the paging message, start a timer, and forward the paging message to the RIC by the CU or eNB;
- send stage 1 paging to corresponding distributed units (DUs)/sectors, wherein the RIC performs an System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (STMSI) lookup, identifies a plurality of target O-CUs/target O-eNBs from the plurality of CUs or eNBs when the RIC finds the mobility context, and sends DUs/sectors corresponding to the plurality of target O-CUs/target O-eNBs where paging needs to be sent based on a calculated UE location;
- and
- based on indicating by one of the plurality of target O-CUs/O-eNBs to the RIC about successful paging, receive notification by the other O-CUs/O-eNBs from the RIC for paging cancellation so that the other O-CUs/O-eNBs discard a buffered paging message upon receiving the indication, wherein the other O-CUs/O-eNBs continue with normal paging when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC.
